Despicable Me 2

Theme: Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde potion for the Minions. Little girl are cute lovable.

Where: Living room with 9 meter ceiling.

Audience: 12 year old girl who wanted to watch a kids movie

Sound System: Logitech speaker with base speaker

Activity: Writing reviews for blogspot. A movie to share with young children especially girls if you have the chance.

Multitasking: Having desert. Checking emails.

Like: Little yellow minions who seem to do the bidding of Gru. The cute little girls. Gru dealing with the adolescence.

The Lone Ranger - Shoulder Exercises

Theme: Justice will prevail and becomes a legend. Plenty of rock throwing (great for encouraging shoulder exercises)

Where: Living room with 9 meter ceiling.

Audience: 3 teenage kids and a 40 something mum

Sound: Logitech speakers with base speaker

Activity: Exercises to strengthen rotator cuff muscles in Left shoulder. The article in NYT will have photos and more detailed instructions on the exercise of how to fix a bad tennis shoulder.

Multitasking: Shoulder exercises for rotator cuff as above and having television dinner.

Like: The great stunt scenes with 'Silver'the spirit horse and galloping on rooftops. Dislike the difficulties in the relationship between Kimosabe and Tonto and how the film is shown in flashback from 1933 in San Francisco. Mainly as a reminiscence by Tonto at a Wild West display of a fair ground.

The Hobbit: An unexpected journey - for butt lift exercises

Theme: Greed brings a curse to everyone. In this case an evil dragon. Cooperation, team spirit and good leadership can overcome unimaginable adversity.

Where: In a living room with two story high ceiling about 9 meters with a 27 inch Sony Brava Televesion and logitech speakers. Sounds has a cavernous quality in this room.

Audience: 3 teenagers and a 40 something mum.

Sound: X2 Logitech speakers with a base speaker.

Activity: 3 sets of butt lift exercises with 36 reps per exercise. Lunges with weights, hip extension from squats with upper limb extension using 2kg and 5 kg weights, feet together everted squats with upper limb extension using 2kg and 5 kg weights. Stretches.

Multitasking: Exercises and interacting with teenagers during the almost 3 hours length movie 169 minutes with some breaks for refreshments.

Like: The great action scenes and the well choreographed fight scenes. Great backdrop and scenery of the mountains and caves in the movie. Dislike complexity of the plot with multiple characters whom the viewers has to work out - more difficult if you have not seen the Lord of the Ring series. In this case there were 3 teenagers to assist with the characters and reference to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Elysium - stomach curls

Theme: Science fiction do good against capitalism and greed.

Where: Qantas flight from Melbourne to Perth December 2013.

Audience: with dad on daytime flight 3pm eastern time to 4pm western time.

Sound: Economy headphones could not hear dialog.  Had to use sony noise canceling ear phones.

Activity: Modified yoga position for plane. Stomach curl - lift both leg 6 inches of floor with knees straight & push down on seat or arm rest to counter balance.  Hold for 20 seconds then repeat. 

Multitasking: Reading work articles in between.  Had in flight lunch.

Like: the simple concept that there can be a man made paradise to be shared by everyone. Resource implications permitting of course.  Neat device that cures all diseases and ailments.

Iron Man 3 on Qantas



Theme: The man makes the machine and it is not the machine that defines the man. Tony Stark returns without his armour and has to make do with his own human skills to get by - at least in part of the movie.

Where: On Qantas Airbus Sydney to Perth in Sept 2013.

Audience: Alone in economy. Daytime flight from 1250pm to 4pm.

Sound: Sony Nice cancelling earphones

Activity: Modified yoga for aeroplane. Cycling in the air. Modified sit ups for airplane seat.

Multitasking: Reading journals and newspaper. Managed to cover journals and newspaper.

Like: Tony Stark's vulnerability and rashness that puts him in strife with the bad guy. I could not guess the outcome of the plot till the very end of the movie. At each stage I could not tell what was going to happen.

Prometheus 2012

Prequel to the Alien Genre

Theme: Aliens and humans mix DNA and breed with unusual results.

Where: Qantas flight from Sydney to New York somewhere over the Pacific Ocean in Dec 2012.

Audience: With teenage boys

Sound: Qantas economy earphones

Activity: Yoga modified for the airplane economy seats. Modified planking during action scenes

Multitasking: Stop movie for a breather as the concepts in the movie were to intense and had to digest the implications of the movie for the Aliens series of movie. How did at all fit in before Alien?

Like: A cerebral movie for Alien fans who are trying to work out whether the monster in Alien series was genetically engineered biotech weapon or just mean animal product of a harsh and challenging environment.

Goemon 2009 - Japanese

Based on life of 16th century Japenese ninja warrior Ishikawa Goemon. His desire to be "so strong no one can steal from him, his vassal years in flashback and his love for Princess ChaCha whom he has been ordered to protect by his mentor warlord Lord Nobunaga.

Theme: War & death is painful business and should be. Servitude and loyalty counts.

Where: Games room on large screen Sony HD televesion. Saturday 3rd Aug screened on SBS 2 at about 10pm at night.

Audience: By myself and everyone had gone to bed or were getting ready to go to bed.

Sound: None, turned all speakers off so as to not wake up anyone. Subtitles were on.

Activity: Exercising Left shoulder rotator cuff muscles. 3 sets of 5 types of exercises using 2 kg weights, bull worker and rubber strap.

Multitasking: During commercials attended to oral hygiene and getting ready to go to bed.

Like: The scenes with the masses of poor people in the city. The large numbers of troops in the battle scenes. The animation like effects of the movie.

The Dark Knight Rises 2012

Background: Based on the DC comic character batman who fights crime incognito.

This movie kept me awake on a long haul flight between 2 continents!!

Theme: If you try hard enough and work hard enough you can overcome any odds especially if they created by the dark forces of evil. A rich man, Bruce Wayne, finds the meaning of true grit in a prison.

Where: On Qantas economy flight long haul from Sydney to JFK New York, New York.

Activity: Stretching exercises on plane: leg raises, static biceps curls, quad and hamstring stretches modified for air plane seat.

Audience: Two teenage boys on economy class with routine plane earphones.

Sound: Sony noise cancelling earphones.

Multitasking: Reading magazines in between scenes and stopping for a nap when tired.

Likes: The total annihilation of batman and how he came back from the brink of his being. The immoral but sexy catwoman who forsakes freedom and money to come back for batman. Love above money and survival.

Theme: Troubled nerdy Teen finds superpowers to deal with growing pains.

Where: QF 747 Economy from Sydney to New York.

Activity: In flight dinner during movie.

Audience: Two teenage boys in adjacent seats.

Sound: Sony noise cancelling head phones.

Multitasking: Eating dinner and watching movie and chatting to teenage boys.

Like: Growing up in New York as a nerd and romance in high school.

Favourite Character: Gwen Stacy's dad who tried so hard to protect her...
